My Soap Opera Life

 Stalking, following & robbing
Back to Full Blog

It seems that every day we're hearing about someone else that has been followed from a WalMart parking lot, or some other such place, to their home to be robbed. Some are taken to an ATM.

A couple of weeks ago, it was one of our county commissioners & his wife. They were at the WalMart between my house & work - where I stop frequently on my lunch hour or after work. They were followed home & robbed.

Recently, a lady was followed but she noticed the car. She took several wrong turns to try to shake them off, but sure enough, she was being followed. She said there were 4 black men in the car. She has a retired police office down the street from her & proceeded to his house. Luckily, another officer was there visiting & she turned in. The car kept going. Thank God for her!

This is getting riduculous. This isn't the big city like Birmingham, Atlanta, or such. I'm hearing that it's gang initiations & such. This is too close to home for my comfort. Whatever it is, it needs to be stopped!

I was amazed (and sooo naive!) when I moved up here to northern Va., from west coast Florida....I'm 40 mins from downtown DC....I never imagined how crime riddled our own Nation's capital is!! Prince Georges county is one of the worst in the whole United States! I'm sorry to the tourist but watch your back when you come up here!

Thank Goodness I live in a nice safe development but man, there's some real craziness out there these days...like never before...

Hi Rubble. I think DC is one of the worst places from crime. One of my sisters lives in Fairfax/Herndon. I took the kids up there in 2001 for a week. We spent a lot of time touring DC. Very interesting place. The only thing that happened while we were there was the first anthrax scare at the Capitol. This was just a few weeks after 9/11 occurred. I do want to go back again as there was so much we didn't get to see.

Just be careful - no matter where you are!

I am absolutely shocked about the amount of violent crime in this area.... when I moved here from Dallas 4 years ago, I figured I would be enjoying a life relatively free from the risk of being a victim of a violent crime... in this being what I consider to be a small town.... then I see all this.... and of course, I was robbed myself.... for the first and only time in my life.

by Randy (PM , CC ) on Thursday June 26, 2008 @ 12:22 PM

Me too, Randy. It seems to be just getting worse. Compared to a large city, it's not much. Being such a small town, you hear about most all of them instead of just a select few. I guess....

Had lunch yet?

I might be taking too much.

Believe me.... your post is about crime?

Well, what I've done to the bathroom at work IS a terrible crime!

I'm just saying!

TMI! TMI! TMI!!

I'm sure your co-workers are ready to KILL you!

You prolly don't need to take any for a day or two. Next time just take the recommended amount. You know they give those amounts for a reason.

Now GO POTTY!

It really doesn't matter where you live anymore Secret, the crime and violence is escalating at a rapid pace. Gone are the days you can relax and not have to worry about your safety. Carjackings have become the big thing here. They are just shooting the people and taking the cars. Everysingle day there are at least two overnight shootings. It isn't getting better.

These are the times I say- Come on God, take us home where there is peace.

Bear Hugs!

its no initiation, its just scumbag punks looking for easy money...in the car, keep the windows up, doors locked and your phone handy for 911 call...and if anyone walks up that you do not know, drive off as fast and safely as possible...or, as I would do...pull out the lil ol 44 and shoot the bastard if he is stupid enough to stay when he sees the cannon...BC

You're so right, Chris. My doors automatically lock as I'm driving off. I usually lock them as soon as I shut the door. From what I understand, they are armed & have shot at some of the people. I don't have a gun, but sure wish I did! I'm going to see about getting some pepper spray since mace is illegal now. It's just getting too scary out here.
You'd be a great protecting neighbor, BC!

You're right, Polar. It doesn't matter where. With the economy the way it is, the gas prices so high, & groceries (everything!) going up, it's only going to get worse. It's insane!

We can only pray for God's shelter over us.

I bet you're a wonderful cook. I don't grill as much as I'd like to, but I guess I do ok. I'm a pretty good cook myself - so I'm told. I don't have a lot of time to do the kind of cooking I like to do.

We've had that happen in our area for the past couple of years...mostly women coming out of a grocery store by themselves...they drive home, and once they pull in a garage and open their car trunk, they are assaulted, groceries and money stolen and left battered on the ground.

Times are worse now and ppl are getting even more desperate, whether it is gang initiations or just desperate ppl.

Hiya Heather! How are ya?

It's not just women here. They got a man & his wife a couple of weeks ago. I look like an easy target when I go places with me & the 3 kiddos. I try to be very aware of my surroundings - especially now. So, we have a serial rapist loose near work, & people choosing victims to rob & do whatever to them.

God help us!

You are so right Secret. This morning I prayed all the way to work. I prayed for the oil CEO's and our people in power that God will touch their hearts to let them know they already have abundance in their lives and to see how much they are hurting America and it's families enough to make the changes needed. This country is in a pivital state right now where we have the power to change things either for the better or for much worse. I pray the right things happens for the sake of everyone.

There is already such an increase in gas drive offs and theft because of the economy. I would hate to see a young mother have go to prison simply because she is trying to feed her children. It may just come to that, you know. I really hope to God it doesn't.

sorry about these sad stories in your town

Crime is pretty low in Maine compared to most states. However, we do have a large number of drug related crimes. Mostly dealing with meth. Its sad

You have inspired me, Secret. I think I will create a post about how people should behave while in a hotel. Its scary the things people do and then wondered why bad things happen!

Huggles!

Me too, Sherry. I told Scott that since this is a small town you hear about all of the crime. In a big city, they only hit on the major ones. If they talked about all of them, they'd be reporting nothing but that stuff.
We should be able to feel safe in our own towns & especially our own homes!
Have a great weekend!!

Hi Polar. Prayers are really all we can do right now. It seems the market has really dropped overnight & gas (along with everything else) just keeps going up & up. I don't see a reason & think we're beng royally screwed.

Keep up the prayers! If we all band together & pray, I know God will listen to us.

Have a great weekend!

That's what really burns me up, Bry. Someone works their tail off to get something for their family. Then another who doesn't do anything goes & "takes" what they want thinking they're entitled.

Hope you have a great weekend!

Hiya Polly! The drug related crimes are some of the worst, I understand. Meth is pretty bad around these parts too. They've had a couple of large arrests lately with that & sting operations. Hopefully more will be brought down soon. I think some larger gangs have moved to the area too. The town I work in is pretty bad with crime. I do feel somewhat safer in the town where I live, but it's still about 18 miles away - not far....

Glad to inspire a post for you! I'll be by to check it out.

Have a marvelous weekend!!

Secret,

June is winding her way through Colorado today - or at least that is the plan I heard. She will arrive home sometime late afternoon Saturday.

Someone said to me last evening, "There is crime in every zip code." and she is correct. I just think some zip codes have higher crime rates than others - and I live between two such zip codes - yet, I do feel safe.

Hi childrenfirst. You have all the right suggestions on what to do if you notice your being watched/followed. I know I'd drive straight to the police dept, if possible. It's awful having to always be on watch, but safety comes first. These jerks need to be apprehended asap!

Oh, you sent your remark private so it doesn't show up on my blog. Not sure if you meant to. Do you mind if I post it? as it has great suggestions that everyone should read.

Comment: I hadn't heard much about these situations near my home, but if this is a trend in your hometown, you are so right in saying it needs to be stopped. What an awful feeling to have to look constantly over your shoulder in normal day to day life. I'm not sure what suggestions you have heard...didn't have time to read all the comments....but I would strongly suggest that you always park in light and near to the store entrance. Also, if you, for any reason suspect that someone is following you or anyone else in the parking lot at the moment you are leaving, alert store security. If you let them know you are concerned, they will take you to your car. Beyond that, if you are driving and someone is following you, NEVER return to your home or a home of anyone you don't want to expose (the lady you mentioned was fortunate having a former police officer friend and more fortunate that another officer was there at the time). I have heard the best thing to do is to drive to either the closest police station (and if you are certain that you are being followed...you could call the police dept so they can catch the stalker). If you cannot locate the police station or it is far out of the way, it is recommended that you go to a very busy place, park right in the fire lane, go quickly inside or stay with your car locked until assistance arrives) and in the worst case scenerio, if the person/people manage to get to you before you are in your car, locked in, give them whatever they ask for and try to remember as many details as you can about them. A good description will greatly aid the police in finding the people responsible for this. We sometimes have to fight for our own safety and to keep our community safe. One would think that there would be some organization that would be alerted when these things become a pattern, but sadly it is often up to us. I wish you and your community the very best. I will keep you in my prayers and hope any of these suggestions will benefit you or someone else. I have a friend who is an ex cop and I 'm glad I listen to his constant, droning safety lessons...lol. Take care....

It is so stressful having to be on guard and vigilent every time a person leaves their home. But, even beyond that, is the very difficult job of teaching our kids how to stay safe. It's a difficult thing to teach them safe habits and yet not cause them to be overly fearful. . .We have a LOT of crime in certain areas, but most of it is at night. It becomes twice as frightening when crime happens in broad daylight.

by lagirl (PM , CC ) on Friday June 27, 2008 @ 9:07 PM

You're right, lagirl, about how hard it is to explain to the kids why they can't just go out & play. It wasn't like this when I was young. The fact that it's happening more in the day is really scary! People have some nerve now...

Wow, That is scary!
Do you have a cell phone? I don't think I would go out without one until they get the ones that are doing the robbing. These days I think the bad criminals find smaller towns easier to rob because the people are not as likely to be looking for robbers.
Everything God Makes Is Beautiful
Have a great Monday!
Be careful, and stay safe!

Yes, I have a cell & don't leave home without it!
It sounds worse in a small town because you hear about most all of them. In bigger cities, you only hear the worst ones...I think.

Thanks Dix
