 Hanging in there....
Back to Full Blog

We made it through cheer camp & started our summer practices last night. I had three girls that didn’t show up, so I had to call them about Thursday’s practice. I’m going to have to stress to the parents (& the girls) how important it is for them to be at practice. For one, they need to be there to learn. We also can’t practice our building if anyone is missing, so this hurts everyone. Once school starts, it will be mandatory with demerits for unexcused missed practices/games. They were given the rules for attendance after they knew they made the squad. So, we’ll see…

My ‘special’ girl was there with her mother. Now, they both pretty much just stand there like a deer in headlights. I can understand as it would be quite overwhelming to take it all in – especially if you’re not used to it. Her mother will help her with a move (or partial move) here or there, but not on a regular basis. I just don’t know how this is going to pan out. Last night, we started just breaking it down by 8-counts very slowly to make sure each girl gets it. The routine itself is pretty fast, so they’ll have to have it down before we can speed it up with the music. They’re doing really well so I know they’ll get it before our first jamboree game in August.

Everything else is going pretty good. Work is, well, work. Home is pretty quiet with the older two gone on their church youth trip all week, but I still have Lulu & Scott there. I’m still pretty busy running around & doing normal everyday stuff, but I’ll manage. Somehow, I’m used to it.

Sorry I haven’t been able to get around to everyone’s blogs lately, but I will be by as soon as I can. I really miss reading yours - Yes, I’m talking to YOU!

It's weird when two of my three kids are gone....well, it used to be weird. It's happening so much now that sometimes I feel like a family of three instead of five but I guess that's the way of life. They grow up and leave us parents behind

Enjoy that "me" time as much as you can. They'll be home before you know it

Hi Sybil. I'm finding that they're gone more & more. I know a lot of it is practices, etc, but even friend time too. It's just part of being a teen. I did it. Even Lulu goes in the summer more. Maybe this is just trial for when they really leave. I'm not looking forward to that. I'll be lost!

I'm gonna do the best I can to totally enjoy my me time. Me thinks I deserve it!

I say you make the girls who missed the cheer practice run laps and do pushups the whole next practice.

They're 8 or 9 years old, right?

Yes I am, lagirl. I hope they do appreciate it - I'm sure they do. You don't realize what all is involved until you're doing it for your own kids. They'll really see when they have their own.

Thanks

I admire everyone that takes on the job of trying to teach children something like baseball or any sport. I like teaching them how to fish, and that can be dangerous at times. But its not like getting a team together.

Secret,
Sounds like you really enjoy what you're doing. You have WAY more energy than I my friend. Stop over, I have a lengthy post, BUT worth the read.

Secret...sounds like a very busy schedule for you. Your cheering story made me laugh. When my oldest was cheering, there was a girl on her squad the was also "special". I don't know how she managed to stay on the squad, I'm just guessing that the girls were very young so they tried to tolerate most anything. She was a little blonde girl, I don't really recall seing her ever move in anyway that remotely resembled what the rest of the girls were doing. I felt terrible for her and wished her mom would find her another activity that she could be proud of, but this is so bad of me and I'm not someone that ususally thinks like this at all....I found it so totally amusing that I was rivetted to the poor kid. I never laughed or drew any attention to her, but it never ceased to amuse me and provided wonderful entertainment. Hope your "special" girl comes around. How old are the kids you instruct? I know almost nothing about cheering, so keep any comments on a 2nd grade level about this. Make sure to take some time for yourself and enjoy your summer.

I know I've commented on a few of your posts today, but it has been the first time I have had on the computer to get around to reading blogs and commenting on them.

Hi childrenfirst. Yes, it's a busy schedule, but I'm really enjoying the girls. I've helped every year for the last 3 that Lulu has participated in this, but this is my first year as "head" coach/sponsor. They're all 3rd & 4th graders - "B team".
I've had parents ask about "the girl that stands there & does nothing". I have to explain her to them. She just wants to be part of the cheering.

I'm doing my best to make time for me too. I'll be kidless next week so that should help with some ME time. Plus I'll be off of work Thursday & Friday for the 4th.
