My Soap Opera Life

 My Yard "pets"
Back to Full Blog

I've been really excited about my critters coming back this year. I've been making sure the bird feeders are full & that I spread some on the ground for the ones who like to eat there. The entire normal crew hasn't arrived yet, but hopefully, they will very soon.

I've always had at least one set of Cardinals male & female. Now I have several babies eating too. I understand that they mate for life (how sweet). The males are very protective too.

I had several Yellow Finch (male) last year. I bought a Finch food sock & saw 1 the very next evening. Yesterday afternoon he brought his girl with him. I hope they all come back cuz they're beautiful bright yellow & fun to watch!

For the last two years I've seen a Indigo Bunting hanging around eating. I didn't know what he was until Dixie told me. I sure hope he comes back! I've never seen a blue as pretty & bright at this is!

My squirrels are back, but so far only 3 or 4. Two of them are babies. Hopefully they won't destroy my feeders this year or I'll be having to "put a cap in 'em". to protect my property. Plus they eat all of my bird food!

I had a Hummingbird buzz through my carport a few weeks ago. I hurried & cleaned my feeder & filled it up. I even bought a new one with red glass 2 weeks ago. Still no Hummingbirds. I wonder where they are? They feed 5 to eight times every hour for 30 to 60 seconds at a time. So, where are mine? I LOVE watching them! Three years ago, I counted around 8 in my yard. They say you can usually double the number you see to know what's actually there. I sure hope they come back. They're such an interesting bird.

I've had 2 bunnies come eat also. I've been seeing them for years. They still get easily spooked & will bolt, but if you're still & quiet, you can watch them eat for a bit.

Scott did see a baby snake a few weeks ago while mowing the front yard, but it went away. I've been looking, but haven't seen any more. Thank God! I do NOT do snakes!

There you have my yard critter update!

I'm enjoying the bird photos on several blogs. Seems like mostly what I see though are the common ones like sparrows, robins, and starlings. (Yuck to that last.)

Hi lonewolf. These are the ones I have, but mostly I have woodpeckers. Some quail have been stopping by too this year, but I rarely see the robins. I do love my birds!

Thanks for stopping by & have a great weekend!

Yeah, I saw a snake.... thing is, to have snakes is actually a good thing in the overall balance of your yard's wildlife.... they keep the mice in check..... I know the poisonous ones have to be killed but it's important to try to keep the good ones around.....

Sincerely,

Randy, the snake whisperer

I love your pictures Secret!
The Mother Rabbit with her baby is so sweet. It looks like you have a good supply of nice birds. I don't understand why you have not had a hummer at your feeder. Maybe they just havent found it yet. I understand how the squirrels can wreck your feeders. I had to put the cones on some of mine to stop them from chewing everything up! We had Raccoons raiding the feeders at night so I had to put grease on the pole. It worked...The next day I could see where they tried to climb up it but could not with it being slippery.

Hope your having a great weekend!

I love my critters too Secret, and can't wait to see which ones come back.

Got some rabbits again this year, and the birds are wonderful. I lost all my deer after the mountain behind our house was clearcut several years ago. Still see some on the roads and in pastures, but we had them come into the yard and enjoy my pear trees.

Take care and have a good weekend. Heide

Great post Secret,
They're ALL too cute! We have a massive amounts of squirrels and rabbits, and in our garden we have lots of different lettuce. The rabbits, needless to say, are devouring our lettuce. I think we have enough to go around for both us and the furry little things!

I have been watching those same birds and critters in my backyard, too. One new addition...a tiny chipmunk. Scrawy doesn't seem to like him much.

COFFEE

Happy Monday Secret! Hope your having fun watching the birds. I don't have as many now. They must be finding enough food in the fields. Or migrated farther North.
Love,Dixie

Hi Dixie. Those pics aren't MY critter, but pics of ones I found to show what kinds I have... I have 2 bunnies, but wish I did have babies.

The hummers may be coming when I'm not watching, but who knows. I used to see them all the time. I've been withing 5 feet of the feeder & watched one eat.

As for the squirrels, I've thought about putting grease on the bottom of the poles so they'll slide off. I might need to do that.

Have a great week!

Hey Heide. Doncha hate it when "progress" runs off your yard pets? I used to see deer nearby, but not so much any more. I guess it'll be less & less due to the new subdivisions that keep going up in the area.

Happy Monday!

Hi Crone. I only have 3 or 4 squirrels this year (thank God!). They took over the yard, destroyed my feeders, & ran off my birds! They're fun to watch, but geez!

I was reading about bunnies the other day & it said NOT to feed them veggies & carrots. I thot that's what they ate!

Have a great Monday!

Hiya Heather! I had 2 chipmunks year before last that stayed around. I've only seen 1 this year - & not lately either. The squirrels don't like 'em around here.

Have a mah-valous week, darlin!

I love to watch the cardinals at my house. You are right...they always come in pairs...though, I have noticed here, that they don't eat together....1 will always be near by while the other eats.

I have so many different kinds of birds and don't know what any of them are...but they are fun to watch.

Hi Belle. I understand that the Cardinals mate for life. Usually the male (more bright red) will come down & eat a bit & check out the spot. Then the lady will come & eat while he watches over her. I have seen them eat together, but he usually watches. Sweet, huh?

I'm sure your selection is probably the same as mine. I love to see them come!

Happy Monday, Belle!

Hi Secret,

I loved your "critter update". The pictures were wonderful. The area I live in has literally tons of deer, which can make riding in a car quite interesting, sometimes. They are so beautiful to watch though, when they are just standing out in the field in the evening!

Have a great day!

Progress is hard on our yard pets Secret! Just not fair!

When my son comes home, he has a fit when he sees all of the big pines being cut down. Some replant, but most don't.

Have a wonderful week. Heide

Secret

We don't have Cardinal out here in California, I sure wish we did. I am loaded with hummingbirds all year round and I love them - I put a fake plant vine around a basket and hung it up and it is top rental property for all the doves - We already have had 4 new baby born and flying. They always lay 2 eggs each - it is by my kitchen window so I get to watch them from eggs to flying.

I agree with you - animals are so exciting and interesting to watch. Have a great day and I hope your hummingbirds show up soon.
