My Soap Opera Life

 "Lettering" in a sport & 2nd place
Back to Full Blog

Last night was a late night (as usual, lately) for all of us. The girls didn't get in from their games until about 11:00, so she spent the night at her dad's. (They were sleeping in this morning & will check in school about 11). The banquet wasn't over until a little after 9:00. We left there, picked up Lulu, & made it home just before 10:00. She was so tired that I sent her to bed & let her get her bath this morning. I also let her sleep in a bit & took her to school cuz the bus comes at 6:45a (too early).

Unfortunately, Tay & her team didn't win either of the games last night as they were defeated by W Morgan 4-0 in both games. They're now out of the play-offs. For such a young team, they had a great season. We watched them really grow from where they started out. They've had lots of experience with these other teams so they'll have a good start for next season. Our pitcher was hurt & possibly sprained her ankle, so she missed the last of the game.

Now I'm down to only Lulu & her softball games. They also lost their game last night. We have another one tomorrow night, if it doesn't get rained out.

The Athletic banquet was really nice. The dinner consisted of lemon chicken, scalloped potatoes, green beans, rolls, salad, peach & apple cobblers. It was really good! Several of the female athletes were not there due to them being at the game. A few of them play softball & basketball (Tay included here). They'll be presented their awards probably today.

Good news? Tay "lettered" in basketball! That's unusual for a freshman to do that. She'll be ordering her Letterman's Jacket soon & now will have her first item to be placed on it. In order to letter in a sport, you must have a certain number of hours played in games to qualify. She was a starter, & their "jumper", she played every game - usually the whole game. I was proud.

So it looks like our softball season will be winding down the end of this month when Lulu finishes her games. She's having about 3 a week.

I have to call all of my cheer squad parents today as we have a meeting Friday night. My duties as Cheer Sponsor/Coach have begun with light duty. That starts full force in June.

If you're still "with me" here, thank you for reading & your interest. I try to keep these short & to the point.

Have a great week!!

Congrats to daughter Tay....I always DID wonder what it meant to "letter" in something and what it took to get one!

Proud moment!!! And to wear it around school!!! Oh those jocks!

I put in millions of hours as a dancer at that age but alas,...no "letter" to wear on a school jacket!! (Just bunions and blisters from toe shoes!)

Hiya Heather!

They played really good & tough, but the other team was just a bit tougher, I guess. They were ranked much higher than us.

Thanks! I didn't know about the lettering either until last night when they talked about it. This was our first year in varsity, so I'm learning too.

Thanks for coming by & have a wonderousful day!

Thanks Rubble! I didn't know until last night, & there's prolly a bit more to it than that. Varsity is a whole new thing for us so I'm learning as we go.

I understand her jacket is about $200. She'll be proud, for sure, wearing it tho! Hopefully she'll letter in softball too; maybe next year if she didn't this time.

I didn't "letter" in band either for 8 years. We put in LOTS of hours!

No letter for band? Wow... that is really surprising. If your high school competed as much as mine did I know they work their asses off!

I lettered in Sports Medicine/Team Manager for sophomore, junior and senior year. The year after I graduated I went to one of the games to see my old coaches and someone stole my pins off my jacket (I left it in the locker room during the game)

My high school did something I thought was pretty cool... we have a "Walkway of Champions" out by the football field comprised of bricks with student athletes names. My senior year our head trainers gave each graduating trainer a brick as a graduation present. So now my name is on the walkway

I can see why your proud of your kids... they really do work hard

No letter, Polly. In fact, since I was in DECA my junior & senior years, I wasn't in band class (only marched on the field for football season) so I didn't even get credit for being in the band all those years. However, I did play solo trumpet both of those years. I miss that part of school.

The "walkway of the champions" is a very cool idea! You have left your mark now.

Yes, I've very proud. They didn't get where they are by not working at it.

Hope you're doing great today!

Hey Polar! There's nothing else I'd rather be doing that watching them do things they enjoy.

I feel pretty lucky & blessed. They've enriched me in ways I could've never imagined.

Have a great day!

Hi Ron. Yes, that's perfectly ok. From what I understand, it's an honor, but basically just means that they've got many hours of active play in games versus sitting on the bench. There might be more to it cuz this is all new to me.

I didn't "letter" in anything either & I turned out fine. Well, I guess that's a matter of opinion!
