Boy suspended for talking to dad in Iraq...
Back to Full Blog

I heard on this on the radio this morning.

The little boy's dad is fighting Iraq. That in itself is bad enough. With the time difference, the only time he can call home to talk to his family is during the day & for only about 15 minutes 2-3 times a week (from what I understand).

Yes, there are rules for no cell phones in school, I know. The mother had talked to the assistant principal & explained the situation. She was told it would be ok for her son to accept a call from his dad. Great, right? Um, nope.

The call came in between classes. A teacher saw him talking while walking down the hall & reported him, taking him to the office.

He was suspended for 3 days! The school says they will NOT change this & he will serve his time. There is no tolerance for this.

Doncha think this is special circumstances? With the rate soldiers are being killed over there, this could very well be the last time the boy every speaks to his dad again!!

I was furious when I heard this!! People have been calling in, etc, but the school still stands - 3 day suspension - & on his permanent record.

This dad is over there fighting in Iraq. He's in the military that fights for our country - our freedom. There "free" time is very limited & only allowed at certain times for short spans.

Do you think the principal, or a teacher, would NOT accept a call from her spouse or son/daughter if they could only call during school hours - & on a cell phone?

Some things aren't just black & white. Sometimes there are special cirmumstances for things.

My daughter was hugging a fellow gal pal in the cafeteria the other day and was chastised by a teacher on cafeteria duty..."We do NOT allow that kind of PDA here at our school." Then she got in trouble again with the SAME teacher the next day when her gal pal was playing around, making her try this dessert and feeding it to my daughter. The teacher came over and told the girls that their behavior was unacceptable.

I'm soooo glad I'm not in school anymore...I don't know how kids and teachers do it without absolutely losing your mind...sooooooooooo much stress.

Yup, glad I got out in '80!!!

Daddy volunteered and wars are wrong so what is special? E-mail and videos work for most don't they?I have no compassion for those that deal in making or sustaining wars...period, esp when the domestic scene is a cluster bomb and all of us are still being screwed by big oil, the Gov (one in the same, they)and all the other greedheads that sold their souls and our asses to China for a few more yuan($$$) BC

Hiya Rubble.

Not acceptable behavior? Having FUN with your friend - who's NOT the opposite sex? It's gotten really bad now. I understand some of the reasons for why, but every gesture isn't about sex.

Thanks for coming by & have a great day!

Hi Chris. I wish we weren't in the middle of this stupid war either, but we are. It's not the little boy's fault either. The father was probably already active before this & had no choice but to go.
I don't EVEN wanna talk about the gov't, big oil, & China....

Anyhoo, have a great day!

If they got the go ahead from the assistant principle then they don't have the right to go back on that word. I'd be telling them the next call they will be getting will be from a lawyer.

Bear Hugs!

A Texas sergeant and his son recently found themselves separated not only by an eight-hour time difference, several bodies of water, hundreds of miles and a war, but by a high school official who suspended the boy for answering his dad's call during class.

Cove High School in Texas, where half the students have at least one parent deployed, justified the punishment against Brandon Hill by saying he had violated the no-cell-phone policy when he took the call from his father, who is serving in Iraq.

"I have been going through a lot of stress lately and my dad’s like my best friend, so I go to him for everything," the sophomore told FOX News on Saturday.

"I needed to talk to him, so my mom got a hold of him on Yahoo and told him to call me, so I answered the phone call in class."

When he learned of his son’s punishment, Master Sgt. Morris Hill said he was unsettled.

"When my wife told me, I was pretty disturbed by it," he said in a phone call from Iraq.

"I was pretty shocked, considering that several months before we left I had talked to the … assistant principal and thought everything was fine," Morris Hill said.

"Since my kid’s been going to the school we’ve had a pretty good working relationship."

And when his mother, Patricia Hill, tried to contact school officials, she received no response until her son’s story garnered media attention.

The matter has since been resolved, Patricia Hill said, but she added that more must be done to protect children around the country from being punished in similar circumstances.

The article I just posted was taken from the local news here

Im torn on this. On one hand I understand that the teenager should be allowed to speak with his father. On the other hand this was not in the hallways, it was during class. And from the article it appears the father was "easily" accesible via Yahoo.

But then I also wonder where do these "special circumstances" stop? There are children who have parents that risk their lives daily as police officers, firefighters, etc.

The article also indicates half the student body has at least one deployed parent. So whatever rules they make need to be fair and just to each student.

Hi Polar. I'm not sure what good that would do. Evidently, the AP had no comment after that...

Hey Polly. I heard he was in the hall between classes. If he was in class, he should've excused himself. I also didn't know that so many other kids had deployed parents.
I'm sure there's more stuff to the story that we don't know. Still, I think it's sad for both of them.....

Thanks for coming by!

These are the same adults who teach relativism - there are no absolutes - oh, but wait, there is one - you can't talk to your dad in Iraq!

Hi Ron. It's really sad. Yes, the dad volunteered to go in the service to defend our country. I doubt he volunteered to go to Iraq & fight in a war that the country doesn't agree with.
I feel the children should be allowed to take calls from their parents that are stationed overseas. There are circumstances here.

Thanks for coming by!

Secret:

Whether one believes or not in the moral and legal justification for the war and occupation in Iraq, a child should be able to receive a telephone call at any hour, day or night, from a parent who is serving there.
